Poker is chief among the list of universally-loved card games. No other casino game blends strategy, skill and luck as seamlessly as poker. And getting into the inner-workings of the game is an absolute cinch. As the people’s favourite, poker can be played in a multitude of forums including online gaming, bricks and mortar casino gaming and home poker gaming.
Home poker is arguably the most exciting gaming variant. This style of play places the onus on the player to function as facilitator of the riveting poker action to follow. And as the host of your own poker games, you’ll naturally be expected to provide the right playing ambience, cuisine (finger foods and beverages) and accouterments (dealer buttons, seats etcetera) that your players desire.
Naturally there are a few items that need to be purchased before a home game can become a reality. These include a decent sized poker table, poker chips, 2 decks of poker cards and a poker clock among others. First and foremost is the issue of legality however. If this is all good and well in your locale, then it’s right down to planning your home game of Texas Hold’em or any other poker variant.
After the desired poker game has been selected, the next step is to decide upon the nature of the poker game. Is it going to be casual or formal? Who are you going to invite? When it comes to player numbers however, it is advisable to stick to between five and seven players for dealer’s choice games. Texas Hold’em games do well with between six and ten players. If 7-card stud is being played, then a maximum player number of seven is permissible.
Buy-ins are the next step. It’s not always easy finding a figure that suits most everyone, but a good idea is to set the buy-in amount at a figure that would otherwise have been spent had you gone out that evening instead. This ranges from a few dollars/Euros to as much as 100. The objective is to entice players into the fold, but not to scare them away.
Betting minimums and maximums require attention too. Note that there are various types of games such as no-limit games, spread-limit games and fixed-limit games. All of these issues can be negotiated and then decided upon beforehand. The goal is have small and big blind bets, not blind players coming into the fold.
